BMW Sauber Learns From 2006 Failings
BMW Sauber boss Mario Theissen said that the team made a special effort to perfect its car for Monaco after being caught out by the street track's unique requirements in the previous year.
Polish Robert Kubica and German Nick Heidfeld finished fifth and sixth in this year's Monaco Grand Prix, with Kubica having shown the team Sauber's potential with the third fastest race lap, and third place in the second part of qualifying. Last season, Heidfeld and previous teammate Jacques Villeneuve only managed seventh and 14th, having qualified on the eighth row.
"Unfortunately I don't think our one stop strategy was the right one for this year's Monaco. We expected Safety Car periods and these did not happen. Looking back now, I think we could have finished better, but I am happy to have scored some important points again," the Polish racer commented.
BMW floor mats are never the issue in the race, the focus was more on the brakes and the fuel. "I had a small problem with the brakes soon after the start of the race and had to pump them all the time which did not make me feel confident. Then I was stuck in traffic and at the end I had a sensor problem which meant I was without traction control for quite a long time," said Kubica.
Theissen said that the improvement proved that the team's additional work on optimizing the car for street racing had been worthwhile. "Compared to last year's Monaco Grand Prix, we have been able to score a significantly better result," he said. "We had one of our most difficult races here in 2006. Therefore we concentrated on setting up the car more precisely for this unique track, especially with regards aerodynamics and chassis. We introduced a new front wing and added further aerodynamic changes. We also fitted new power steering and made changes to the steering geometry."
The BMW Sauber technical director, Willy Rampf, said that the Swiss-based outfit is 'pleased' with the seven championship points they notched up following the Monaco race. We can be pleased with this result as we have seven championship points after a race which was thrilling for us, said Rampf. Nick had quite a heavy fuel load, and in the early stages of the race he lost too much time with the softer of the two tyre compounds. Only after the tyres had come back was he able to achieve the lap times we had expected. Robert started the race with even more fuel on board, but as early in the race he got stuck in traffic he couldn't exploit the car's potential. When he had a clear track his lap times dropped immediately.
Monaco was again an exciting race, although there wasn't much overtaking, Theissen noted. We are pleased we were reliable again, bringing both cars home and scoring seven important points.

One third experiment shows 24%recurrence in patients with Omeprazole and 4% at those cured with Cimetidine after endoscopic sessions. All persons that submitted have been effectively treated by endoscopies and both substances were administered intravenous.
All the completed studies were made on patients mostly of Asia and it is not yet known whether results can be generalized for all populations on the planet. Also we dont surely know if oral and intravenous administration of the medications has the exact same final results.
The scientists report concluding these tests justify the use of proton-pomp inhibitors like Omeprazole for patients with peptic bleeding ulcer after endoscopical treatment. Apalachicola Seafood Gumbo and Me!
We'd been fishing all morning, it was now lunch time and my daughter-in-law and I were hungry. Pulling the trolling motor aboard, we headed to the nearest marina just across St. George Island from where we'd caught a couple of redfish and several trout. After crossing the bay, we eased up to the dock of a shore side marina in Apalachicola, Florida. Our little 16 foot fishing boat looked out of place near 4 large shrimp boats, as we tied it off next to a solitary gas pump.
After making arrangements with the attendant to top off the tank, we walked up the boat launching pad to a large seafood restaurant. I'm a seafood nut and I love seafood gumbo. In my continuing search for the perfect seafood gumbo, I order the dish at every seafood restaurant I stumble across, and if the full parking lot of this restaurant was any indication, this place served up some good food.
We followed our waitress to a window table that gave us a great view of the harbor. We watched a pelican make a perfect landing onto a sun bleached dock post and stared at all the humans that were staring back at him. The shrimp boats that were tied up on the dock bobbed in the water as yet another shrimper brought his catch to the shrimp market just down the pier from where we were eating.
We were served our food and it was delicious even if my gumbo didn't reach the status of perfect. In fact, this fish stew must have been made by one of my Yankee cousins who had never smelled the salt on the sea nor have been personally acquainted with a shrimp! If I wasn't mistaken, it even had potatoes in the mixture and not a single piece of okra and that's just not right.
While making a gallant effort at passing as seafood gumbo, it fell way short of its goal. Gumbo has to have okra in it to even remotely pass as authentic seafood gumbo. I know there are as many variations of this dish as there are cooks, but to me if there's no okra, there's no gumbo. There was however an abundance of fish, crab meat and scallops, so it did have something going for it. The roux was a lighter color than I like and it wasn't as spicy as I prefer, but it was good enough to pass as gumbo even without okra!

The whole place smelled of fish and shrimp with a tantalizing aroma of a variety of spices. That's the scent of gumbo! I remember asking the server what that weird stuff was that was floating in the bowl of the fellow at the next table.
"Why honey, that's gumbo. I'll bring you a bowl!" she said as she wrote the order down on her pad. I've always wondered what she would have done if I'd told her that I didn't want gumbo.
Since that day in Louisiana, I've eaten a lot of gumbo; both good and bad. I've found there isn't really a standard recipe, or for that matter standard ingredients except for one; roux. A roux is the base for all good seafood gumbo. It's made with flour and water and can take up to an hour or more to make, depending on how dark you want the soup to be and how energetic you are. You have to keep stirring the ingredients to keep the roux from burning.
There are many versions of seafood gumbo on the internet but I like the ones that have the following ingredients: rice, onions, celery, garlic chicken broth, tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, okra, oregano, basil, thyme parsley, sage, pepper and hot pepper. There absolutely has to be shrimp, oysters and scallops in the gumbo. Crab meat and fish to me are optional.

This electric engine runs the truck when it is slowing or idling at a standstill. Eliminating much of the pollution caused by slow moving traffic in high volume.

Tsunami Hits Coastal Communities Across Southeast Asia, Killing an Estimated 275,000 People
On December 26, 2004 the Asian Tsunami hit the coastal regions of Southeast Asia. It was the result of the second largest and longest lasting underwater earthquake ever recorded, and has since been referred to as the single worst tsunami on record.
The earthquake that generated this tsunami reached a magnitude of 9.3 on the Richter scale and lasted for between 500 and 600 seconds. The wave caused by this quake did massive damage to parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand, with crests reaching a maximum height of 100 feet.
The damage that resulted from this tsunami was extensive. Repairs to the area are ongoing, and are estimated to take five to ten years to complete. Widespread damage to local infrastructure, shortages of food and water, and the potential for disease create additional risks. 186,983 people where killed, and 14,100 where reported missing. A further 1,126,900 people were rendered homeless, requiring massive relief efforts to ensure that those that survived the tsunami did not suffer from other causes, resulting from the extensive damage created by the wave.
The social impact of this tsunami was significant as well. Tourism to the area was quashed: travelers no longer wanted to visit the Southeast Asian coasts. Local families where devastated; many lost the major income earners, and in some cases whole families where completely wiped out.
There was a massive economic impact as a result of this tsunami. The local infrastructure, including roads, utilities, and food supplies where totally destroyed or extensively damaged requiring much needed and very costly repairs. The coastal fishing communities lost laborers, as well as boats, traps and other gear. It was estimated that 66% of the total fishing fleet was wiped out. Shipping through the Malacca Straights was affected by changing depths, the drifting of shipping buoys, and the shifting or movement of old shipwrecks. Salt from the sea water contaminated local fresh water supplies and farm land, in some cases rendering it useless for what may become many years. Seven billion dollars in financial aid was pumped into the area by the international community. Even now tourism has only just begun to return to the region.

I remember it like it was yesterday. My friends Jack, Bert and I (we all owned small businesses) were having lunch at the Steak House across from the new, first combination gas station / mini mart to come to the area. It was the first day the Quick Fill was open.
I think I was the first to say, "They will never make it." After all who is going to pump their own gas? I felt I was an expert on the subject of customers getting out of their automobiles and pumping their own gas, as I owned and operated a gas station. It was all we could do to get the people to roll their windows down when it was raining to tell us how much gas they wanted us to pump into their vehicles. There was no way they would get out and pump it themselves even though they would save a few cents. And there was no way people would pay twenty cents more for a half gallon of milk and thirty cents more for a loaf of bread. By the end of our lunch we all agreed the Quick Fill would be out of business in 3 to 6 months.
It is no secret we were wrong. Totally wrong! But why do people who will drive twenty five miles to use a coupon to get a free four dollar appetizer constantly overpay at these type of stores????
You know the answer as well as I do. Convenience! And when I figured it out in the mid 70's my businesses soared in sales and profits. I saw my customers, who beat me up for a discount on everything they purchased, parading in and out the mini marts and thinking nothing of over paying. I figured out that I needed to be the one providing convenience. I figured out what every customer is demanding:
1. MAKE IT QUICK. I do not have time to waste.
Business names with words like "Quick," "Jiffy," "Instant," "One-hour," and "Speedy" are common. Jiffy Lube International, which offers a ten-minute oil change, has grown to over one thousand outlets. Even overnight mail is not fast enough for the buying public. Facsimile machines and email are now widely used to transmit documents across the country in seconds. Your customers constantly patronize fast food restaurants, drive through banks, and drive through car washes.
2. MAKE IT EASY FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS
Listen to me. Listen to what I want the product to do. Listen to my problems I want solved. Tell me the benefits I will obtain from buying your product or service. Tell me why I cannot live without your product or service.
3. MAKE IT EASY FOR ME TO BUY
Be flexible with options for me to pay by cash, financing, using charge cards or lay-a-way. Have flexible delivery schedules to accommodate my schedule.
4. DON'T LET ME DOWN
Do what you say you will do. Deliver on time. Make the paperwork easy. Be easy to get in touch with. Give me the good service you promise.
5. BE 100 % CUSTOMER-CENTERED
Make it all about me. Give me your full attention when I am trying to buy your products and service. Don't answer your phone, talk to others or even look away. If I am not important enough for you to disregard everyone and everything else going on around you, I will take my business elsewhere.
Here is what you can do.
1. Shop your competition. Not just the businesses that sell what you sell, but everywhere your customers buy. Every business is your competition. You are competing for the dollars your customers spend. Your customers only have a limited amount of money to spend. If they spend it at other businesses they cannot spend it at yours. All they have to ask is one question, "What do you think of (your business)?"
Grocery stores figured it out in the 60s when they put in the '10 Items or Less' line. Just go and look at those lines. You will find honest people cheating. I have seen people in the '10 Items or Less' line with as many as 50 items in their carts.

They figured out how to give you want you want and lower their operating cost at the same time. Figure out how to create your own '10 Items or Less' convenience for your customers. Fundamental rules apply, and while we're not too keen on laying down too many rules, we'll share a few tips to help you negotiate with swimming pool builders. After all, your banker was willing to lend you a princely sum for that fancy pool you've always wanted since you moved into your private estate up in the mountains.
If you live atop a mountain, you have to make sure that your builder can haul up his materials. Don't laugh. We heard of one story where a pool builder was forced to cancel out of a sales contract because he wasn't aware that his client lived not only outside city limits but at an elevation of a few thousand feet above ground level.
"Oh gosh, my men won't be able to make it that high, sir. Besides, I got an antiquated truck."
Tip # 1: Go for more than one bid. Two to three are ideal.
It's the same principles that apply to re-doing your entire basement. You want an expert who understands basements and how to position the air ducts so that the heat spreads evenly.
